MATTIAS PETTERSSON’S INTERPRETATION
“Lorsque j’ai vu cette tenue, j’ai immédiatement repensé à une série de photo de moi quand j’étais petit : dessus, on pouvait me voir habillé en salopette de velours noir et nœud papillon. J’ai souvent beaucoup ri en regardant ces photos, car elles semblent toutes identiques : moi, avec EXACTEMENT la même tête réjouie, encore et encore. Je suis allé dans ma maison de campagne d’enfance pour travailler sur ce projet ; j’ai commencé à me replonger dans les pensées que je pouvais avoir, moi, cet enfant heureux et pas social pour deux sous, perdu dans un monde imaginaire à longs cheveux. Les premières années de ma vie, je voulais absolument ressembler à mes grandes sœurs. Dix ans plus tard, je me sentais déjà comme le mouton noir de la famille : une vision de la vie et des valeurs différentes de celles qu’on avait pu m’apprendre. Ces deux illustrations sont le résultat de cette réflexion ; une version nouvelle et heureuse sortie de ce monde imaginaire, mon gagne pain !!”

“When I saw this outfit I immediately came to think of a photo series of me as a child, dressed in black velvet overalls and matching bow tie. I have been laughing at these pictures before, because they look just the same all of them. Me with the EXACT same happy face, over and over again.
I went to my childhood home in the Swedish countryside to work on this and started to work around thoughts of me as that happy child, with poor social skills, lost in an imaginary world of never ending hair. First wanting to be and to have whatever my bigger sisters had, then ten years later feeling like the black sheep of the family with a wish for a different way of life and with values different from theirs.These two pictures are what came out of the process. (Now happily back to imaginary worlds, and poor social skills. And making a living out of it!)”

Mattias Pettersson est un artiste basé à Gothenburg en Suède ; et plus précisément, dans un lieu qui lui sert à la fois d’appartement et de studio de travail, enseveli sous une multitude de trouvailles kitch et déjantées, chinées aux marchés aux puces. Après des études de photographie, graphisme et modélisme, Mattias travaille maintenant en free lance en tant qu’illustrateur – il vend par ailleurs des fripes sélectionnées par ses soins et restaure de vieux bijoux. Mattias suit son inspiration ; là où elle l’emmène, il va. Sous des apparences extravagantes, le travail de Mattias est toujours lié à des causes auxquelles il est attaché : que ce soit pour le développement durable, en utilisant des matériaux recyclés et chinés, ou pour l’égalité des sexes et le droit des animaux, en dessinant des personnages hybrides et libres de tout carcan. Nourrie par d’incessantes recherches, son imagination n’a pas de limites – Mattias s’étonne toujours en réalisant que ce sont les éléments les plus bizarres et inattendus qui l’inspirent le plus. Ce qu’il préfère, c’est combiner des techniques différentes afin de créer des images plus proches de l’imaginaire que de la réalité. Mattias Pettersson travaille avec LFG depuis le premier volume du Little Fashion Book et a inventé les animaux de la Little Denim Gallery ; chaque saison, il les embarque dans d’incroyables aventures, toujours plus farfelues.

Mattias Pettersson is an artist based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Amongst the chaotic world of crazy flea markets and kitsch objects, is a place he calls both his home and studio. Pettersson studied Photography, Graphic Design and Tailoring, he now works as a freelance stylist and illustrator, and he also sells secondhand re-styled jewellery. Taking inspiration from the world that surrounds him, he often tries to incorporate the environment in his work (by using recycled and second hand materials) and is keen to approach gender and animal rights concerns in his work. He draws figures that are free from the constraints of gender and creates characters that are hybrids of humans and animals. His inspiration is driven by a constant search for new visual aids: they can often be found in the most unexpected and bizarre places! He prefers to combine many different techniques in order to create pictures that are far closer to fantasy than reality. Pettersson has worked with LFG from the very beginning and created the Little Denim Gallery cartoons. Each season he takes them on incredible and eccentric adventures.
